About Us

Tomek and Gosia Piatek, siblings and co-founders of Bento, were born in Poland and raised in New Zealand. With expertise in architecture, design, and sustainability, they embarked on the journey of creating Bento — a modular, transportable cabin. Together, they share enthusiasm for healthy, well-designed, and natural living spaces.

Tomek Piatek

I'm an architecture graduate from Victoria University of Wellington. As a minimalist, I love the idea of simplifying life, and that's what inspired me to create Bento—a compact cabin that's big on functionality thanks to clever design.

In my work, I'm driven by a desire to address climate change. That's why when I designed the Bento cabin, I made sure it didn't rely on gas, included a composting toilet, and was ready for solar power—making it possible for people to live off-grid if they choose.

Outside of work, I live in Mount Maunganui with my wife and teenage twins. I have interests in woodworking, drawing, philosophy, meditation and rock climbing. I’m a vegetarian and believe in living gently on our planet.

Gosia Piatek

I'm the founder of Kowtow, a certified Fairtrade organic cotton brand based in Wellington, and a Victoria University graduate in Commerce. My life's passion lies in improving products that fulfill basic human needs, such as clothing and shelter. I'm deeply fascinated by materiality—what things are made of and how they are made. Do they enhance livelihoods? Promote health and well-being? Are they sourced with sustainable certifications? Like Tomek, I am inspired by the natural world and committed to developing products that leave a gentle footprint.

I split my time between Wellington and London, where I live with my English film director partner and our son. I find joy in growing flowers, making ceramics, walking holidays, embracing plant-based eating, immersing myself in nature and art.
